How to make oat milk with a few simple ingredients in about five minutes! Our oat milk recipe is easy and perfect for baked goods, cakes, smoothies, coffee, or cereal.
I really like oat milk and I like to make it at home. Homemade oat milk is inexpensive and delicious and only requires a few simple ingredients, which I bet you already have sitting in your kitchen!
When I realized how easy it is to make oat milk, I found myself making it. Whenever I’m baking and realize I’m out of regular or dairy-free milk, homemade oat milk is my hero! All I need is 5 minutes, and I’m ready to go! Use oat milk in breakfast treats like our vegan cookies and vegan blueberry muffins, or add it to iced coffee and your favorite smoothie recipes!
Key Ingredients
- Rolled Oats: We recommend using rolled oats to make oat milk for best results. Instant oats are highly processed and contain little oat milk. Steel cut oats are more challenging to blend and will not make oat milk as creamy as rolled oats. We also use rolled oats to make our daily oatmeal recipe and easy oatmeal cookies! If you are sensitive to gluten, look for certified gluten-free oats before making your own oat milk.
- It’s cold Water: Ice water is the secret to the best homemade oat milk. If you’ve had problems with thin oat milk, use cold water when blending the oats. The cold water softens the starch in the oats, preventing that gummy, slimy texture.
- Optional: Feel free to flavor your homemade milk with vanilla extract, sea salt, cocoa powder, or sweeteners like maple syrup or honey. You can even make strawberry oat milk and mix in some strawberries (frozen is best)!
How to Make Oat Milk
Making your own oat milk is incredibly easy, and once you try it, you’ll be hooked! I often found myself running out of milk, especially in the middle of baking. Now, homemade oat milk is my go-to solution. It’s simple and useful. I do it all the time.
To make oat milk at home, throw 1 cup of rolled oats and 4 cups of very cold water into your blender. You can add a little vanilla, maple syrup, or a pinch of salt for flavor.
Blend the mixture for 30 to 45 seconds until nice and smooth. Then, take a nut milk bag, a clean cotton towel, or a few layers of cheesecloth to strain the milk. This removes any remaining oat bits and gives you a silky smooth texture. It also helps to prevent the gummy texture or curdiness of homemade oat milk sometimes.
I recommend straining the oat milk a second time for best results. This extra step ensures a creamy (not runny) consistency that’s perfect for coffee, smoothies, or baking.
Easy Homemade Oat Milk
Oat milk is a creamy, delicious, plant-based milk that only requires a few ingredients and five minutes to make. Use oat milk instead of dairy milk in baked goods, add it to smoothies, coffee or pour over your favorite cereal.
Makes 3 cups
You will need it
1 cup (113g) rolled oats
4 cups (946ml) cold water
1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, optional
1/2 to 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional vanilla milk
Pinch of fine sea salt, optional
Directions
1Add the oats, cold water, and any optional ingredients to the blender. Cover with a lid and mix for 30 to 40 seconds. It’s okay if you see spots on the oats. It is best not to overmix because it can cause a thin texture.
2Stir in the oat milk. This is best done with a nut milk bag, a clean cotton dish towel, or several layers of cheesecloth placed over a large bowl or jar. (I like to double press the mixture so the solids are removed.)
3Store homemade oat milk in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Shake or stir before use.
Tips from Adam and Joanne
- Iron oats: These won’t make the milk as creamy as rolled oats, but they will work. For best results, use a high-powered blender. We do not recommend using instant oats because they are already processed, which adds starch to the milk (which compromises the texture).
- To prevent soft homemade oat milk: The starch in oats can contribute to the small amount of sugar in homemade oat milk. To prevent this, use very cold, icy water, don’t soak your oats, don’t overmix the oats, and strain the oat milk to remove excess starch.
- Make strawberry oat milk: Add frozen berries for a berry flavored milk. Fresh are fine, but frozen berries help reduce starch.
- Chocolate oat milk: Add a tablespoon or two of cocoa powder and sweeten to taste with maple syrup or honey.
- Why is my oat milk separating? Some separation is completely normal. Skim or stir the milk before use.
- Is homemade oat milk foamy? Unfortunately, no. Store-bought foamed oat milk has a few extra ingredients (like stabilizers) to help it foam up and heat up without turning smooth.
